Decal application for corporate merch in Türkiye
Decal application is the decoration method behind most full-colour logos on ceramic mugs, glassware, water bottles and complex-shaped hard goods. This page covers water-slide decals, vinyl decals, ceramic-fired decals and where decals outperform direct printing on hard surfaces.
Where decals earn their place on a corporate merch program
Decal application is the right answer when you want a full-colour graphic on a curved, irregular or photo-realistic surface — a ceramic mug, a glass tumbler, a stainless bottle, an enamel pin, a hard plastic enclosure. The decal is printed off the substrate on a flexible carrier film, then transferred to the final product where the carrier is washed away or peeled off, leaving the printed image bonded to the surface.
The technique handles full-colour photographic imagery, gradients, fine type and complex geometry that no other decoration method can reproduce on a hard surface. Pad printing can do a curved surface but only in 1-4 spot colours. UV printing can do full colour on a hard surface but requires a flat or gently curved printable area. Decals cover the gap between the two.
In Türkiye, decal production for corporate merch runs through our Levent studio for water-slide decals and through our İkitelli ceramics partner for kiln-fired ceramic decals. Both methods ship finished decals for application, which is the bottleneck on most programs — applying decals consistently on 500 ceramic mugs at production speed takes a steady hand and a controlled environment.
Types of decal we use
Water-slide decals (also called water-transfer decals) are printed on a water-soluble release paper with a water-activated adhesive. The decal is cut, soaked in water for 10-20 seconds, slid off the carrier onto the substrate, and smoothed into place. Water-slide decals work on ceramic, glass, enamel, painted metal and most smooth hard surfaces.
Heat-release decals are printed on a heat-resistant carrier and transferred with heat and pressure (typically 150-180°C). Heat-release decals work on ceramic (before kiln firing), coated steel, aluminium, melamine and acrylic. They are the right answer when the substrate can take heat but the decal needs to wrap a curved area without tearing.
Vinyl decals are pre-cut coloured films applied with transfer tape. They work on glass, acrylic, painted metal, vehicle panels, signage boards and most smooth hard surfaces. Vinyl decals are the right answer for short runs, signage, window branding and vehicle livery where the design is single-colour or has pre-separated colour layers.
Ceramic-fired decals (also called ceramic transfers) are printed with ceramic pigments and fused to the substrate during kiln firing at 700-850°C. They are the right answer for premium drinkware that needs dishwasher durability — a properly fired ceramic decal survives 1,000+ dishwasher cycles without visible wear.
Substrates and product fit
Ceramic mugs, ceramic espresso cups, ceramic travel mugs and ceramic decorative items all accept decals cleanly. We work with partner ceramic manufacturers in Kütahya, Bilecik and İstanbul for blanks; for premium programs we source from European manufacturers with lead times of 15-25 working days. Water-slide decals work on glazed ceramic; ceramic-fired decals are required for dishwasher-safe decoration.
Glassware — wine glasses, champagne flutes, tumblers, decanters — accepts water-slide decals cleanly. We work with partner glass manufacturers in İstanbul and Kırklareli (Paşabahçe and Beypazarı-equivalent producers) for blanks. For dishwasher-safe decoration, ceramic-fired decals are required.
Stainless steel, aluminium and coated metal hard goods — water bottles, hip flasks, travel mugs, pen barrels — accept heat-release decals cleanly. For curved surfaces like bottle bodies, the decal is cut to a precise shape that wraps the curvature without distortion. We work with partner mills in Kayseri and Konya for metal blanks.
Artwork and colour
Decals reproduce full-colour CMYK artwork with gradients, photographic detail and fine type. The artwork is printed on a wide-format digital printer in our Levent studio, then sealed with a protective overprint clear or matte coat. For ceramic-fired decals, the artwork is printed with ceramic pigments and registered with the substrate's curvature before kiln transfer.
Spot colour reproduction is achievable through custom-mixed inks but is rarely worth the cost on decals because the method already supports full CMYK. For corporate brand colours that fall outside the CMYK gamut, we add a fifth or sixth ink station with the brand Pantone reference — common for premium drinkware programs where brand fidelity matters.
Decal size is limited by the carrier film and the printer width. Our standard carrier film handles up to 400×300 mm decals; for larger decals (vehicle livery, signage), we use roll-fed vinyl at partner facilities in İkitelli. For panoramic wraps (a full bottle or a full glass circumference), the artwork is split into overlapping panels that are applied in sequence.
Application and finishing
Applying a decal cleanly to a curved surface is a manual skill. Our application team in Levent averages 60-90 ceramic mugs per hour per operator for water-slide decals and 30-40 ceramic mugs per hour per operator for ceramic-fired decals (which require kiln transfer and firing). For larger runs we run two-operator teams with a single-supervisor QA check.
Ceramic-fired decals go through a kiln at 700-850°C in our partner facility in İkitelli. The firing process takes 8-12 hours including ramp-up, soak and cool-down. Energy costs make ceramic-fired decal more expensive than water-slide decal, but the durability is unmatched — a properly fired ceramic decal is dishwasher-safe for the life of the product.
For decal programs that need a registered debossed or embossed mark alongside the printed graphic, we run the deboss in a second pass after the decal has been sealed. The combination of decal + deboss is a frequent ask for premium corporate gifts — a full-colour logo on the front of a notebook cover and a blind debossed mark on the back, for example.
Run sizes, lead times and unit economics
Decal application is most economical on runs of 50-500 units. Below 50 units, the manual application labour dominates the unit price; above 500 units, manual application becomes the bottleneck and we usually suggest UV printing on flat surfaces or pad printing for spot-colour curved work as alternatives.
Lead time is 12-18 working days for a typical corporate drinkware program: 3-5 days for decal printing, 2-3 days for blank sourcing and QC, 5-7 days for application, 2-3 days for kiln firing and QC. Repeat orders with held decal stock drop to 7-10 working days.
For premium programs that combine decal application with a personalised element (name, date, serial number), we apply the personalisation in a second pass with pad printing or laser engraving. The personalisation adds 2-3 working days to the lead time and is typically priced as a per-piece add-on.
Durability and care guidance
Water-slide decals on ceramic mugs are hand-wash only. They survive 50-100 domestic wash cycles before visible edge wear; they are not dishwasher-safe. We supply a care card with every order and recommend a hand-wash only protocol on the product packaging.
Ceramic-fired decals on ceramic mugs are dishwasher-safe and survive 1,000+ dishwasher cycles. This is the right answer for corporate drinkware that will see regular use — a company-branded mug that goes through the office dishwasher every day.
Vinyl decals on hard surfaces have a service life of 2-5 years depending on UV exposure, temperature cycling and surface preparation. They are removable with heat (hair dryer or heat gun) without damaging the substrate, which makes them the right answer for temporary signage, event branding and vehicle livery.
Where we run decal application in Türkiye
Decal printing sits in our Levent studio with overflow capacity at the İkitelli ceramics partner facility for kiln-fired work. Application is in Levent for water-slide and heat-release decals, and at the İkitelli partner facility for ceramic-fired decals. Ceramic blanks come from Kütahya, Bilecik and İstanbul partner manufacturers; glass blanks from İstanbul and Kırklareli; metal blanks from Kayseri and Konya.
For premium corporate gift programs delivered to İstanbul offices, Ankara government and diplomatic addresses, and Antalya resort venues, we run hand-delivery for high-value orders and tracked road freight for larger volumes. Export orders consolidate at our Tuzla depot.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum order for decal application?
For a new design with a new decal, the practical floor is 50 units. Below that, the manual application labour and decal print setup dominate the unit price and clients often choose UV printing or pad printing instead.
How long does a decal order take?
A typical corporate drinkware program with ceramic-fired decals takes 12-18 working days: 3-5 days for decal printing, 5-7 days for application, 2-3 days for kiln firing. Water-slide decal orders without kiln firing drop to 7-10 working days.
Are decal-decorated mugs dishwasher-safe?
Ceramic-fired decals are dishwasher-safe and survive 1,000+ dishwasher cycles. Water-slide decals are hand-wash only and survive 50-100 domestic wash cycles. Vinyl decals on hard surfaces are removable with heat and have a 2-5 year service life depending on conditions.
Which substrates work with decal application?
Glazed ceramic, glass, painted metal, coated metal, melamine, acrylic and most smooth hard surfaces. Water-slide decals for ceramic, glass and painted metal; heat-release decals for coated metal, melamine and acrylic; vinyl decals for signage, windows and vehicle panels.
Can decals reproduce photographic imagery?
Yes — decals are the right answer for full-colour photographic graphics, gradients and complex imagery on hard surfaces. The artwork is printed CMYK on a wide-format digital printer, sealed with a protective overprint and applied to the substrate.
Is Corp-Merch a licensed ceramics decorator or officially accredited by any ceramic manufacturer?
We are an independent corporate merch decoration provider in Türkiye. We are not licensed, endorsed or accredited by any ceramic, glass or metalware manufacturer. Brand and product names are used to describe compatible substrates and decoration methods.
