Digital foil for corporate merch in Türkiye

Digital foil is the short-run metallic finish behind premium business cards, certificates, presentation folders, packaging accents and event invitations. This page covers how digital foil differs from hot-stamp foil, the substrates it works on, and where it replaces or complements traditional foil stamping.

What digital foil is and how it differs from hot-stamp foil

Digital foil — sometimes called digital foil printing or toner foiling — uses a toner-based digital press to lay down a sticky image of the artwork on the substrate, then a metallic foil sheet is fused to the toner under heat and pressure. The excess foil is reclaimed; the foil that has bonded to the toner stays, leaving the metallic mark on the substrate.

The traditional alternative is hot-stamp foil stamping, which uses a metal die and counter-die to press a foil into the substrate. Hot-stamp foil produces a deeper, more brilliant mark with better abrasion resistance, but the metal die adds setup cost and lead time that doesn't make sense on short runs.

Digital foil closes that gap. There is no metal die — the toner image is the carrier. Setup cost is essentially zero on a per-design basis, which makes digital foil the right answer for short runs of 1-500 pieces where the per-piece cost of a hot-stamp die would be prohibitive. The trade-off is a slightly less brilliant mark and lower abrasion resistance — typically rated for 200-400 touch cycles versus 1,000+ for hot-stamp foil.

Substrates and product fit

Digital foil works on coated and uncoated paper, paperboard, recycled board, textured stocks and most synthetic substrates that can pass through a digital press and accept a toner image. Coated stocks from 150 GSM up hold the foil cleanly with sharp edges. Uncoated stocks from 200 GSM up hold the foil but with slightly softer edges that read as more elegant on certain brand programs.

Common corporate applications: business cards (350-700 GSM with digital foil accent), presentation folders (250-350 GSM with full-coverage digital foil logo), certificate stocks (250-300 GSM with formal crest or seal), event invitations (250-300 GSM with personalisation), packaging accents (rigid box wraps, belly bands, sleeve wraps), hang tags for apparel (200-300 GSM).

Digital foil also works on apparel tags and labels — a foil-stamped hang tag attached to a piece of merchandise can carry a metallic logo that reads as premium even if the garment itself uses silkscreen or DTF. This combination is common in the fashion and beauty segments where the hang tag is part of the brand experience.

Foil colours and combinations

Standard digital foil colours include gold, silver, copper, rose gold, holographic, matte black, matte white, and a small range of pastel tints. The metallic foils are vacuum-metallised polyester films; the matte colours are pigmented foils. Gold and silver are the most common corporate choices; rose gold and copper have grown in the fashion and beauty segments.

Holographic foil shifts colour under viewing angle and is used for entertainment, gaming, music and youth-segment merchandise. Matte black foil reads as a subtle premium mark on dark substrates; matte white foil works as a reverse-effect mark on coloured paperboard. For programs that need a brand-precise metallic, custom-mixed foils are available with 3-5 working day lead times.

Digital foil combines cleanly with full-colour digital printing. The most common corporate combination is a CMYK-printed base with a digital foil accent on the logo — a four-colour digital print under a gold or silver foil logo. This is the standard treatment for premium business cards and presentation folders and is achievable in a single production pass on our Levent press.

Artwork preparation and design detail

Digital foil artwork must be vector. We accept AI, EPS and PDF with outlined curves. Raster artwork needs conversion to vector first, which our Levent studio handles at no extra charge on simple logos. The vector file is then placed on a separate foil plate layer in the pre-press workflow so the foil is registered accurately to the printed underlay.

Minimum detail depends on the substrate. On coated paper, hairlines down to 0.3 mm and text down to 6 pt reproduce cleanly. On uncoated paper, the minimum detail rises to about 0.5 mm and 8 pt because the toner spreads slightly into the paper fibres. We test-foil every new substrate on a sample before committing a production run.

For variable-data digital foil (each piece carries a unique name or number), we run the artwork through a variable-data workflow that personalises the foil image per piece. Common applications: numbered certificates, named invitations, VIP event passes. The variable-data workflow adds 1-2 working days to the lead time and is typically priced as a per-piece add-on.

Run sizes, lead times and unit economics

Digital foil is most economical on runs of 25-500 pieces. Below 25 pieces we still run it, but the press setup cost becomes a meaningful share of the unit price. Above 500 pieces, hot-stamp foil becomes more cost-effective because the per-piece die cost amortises out. The crossover point depends on the substrate and the design complexity, but typically falls between 500 and 1,000 pieces.

Lead time is 5-7 working days for a typical corporate business card or invitation order: 1-2 days for press setup and proofing, 2-3 days for production, 1-2 days for finishing and pack-out. Express 3-4 day turnarounds are available on simple jobs with in-stock substrates.

For programs that combine digital foil with a structural finish (rigid box wrap, magnetic closure, ribbon), we run the digital foil print in Levent and the structural finishing at our Esenler partner facility, with assembly at our Tuzla depot. The combination adds 3-5 working days to the lead time and is typically priced as a per-piece add-on.

Durability and care guidance

Digital foil is rated for 200-400 touch cycles on coated paper and 100-200 cycles on uncoated paper. It survives mailing, handling and light use without visible wear. For high-touch applications (packaging that will be opened and closed repeatedly, name badges that are handled daily), we usually suggest hot-stamp foil instead because of its higher abrasion resistance.

On certificates, invitations and presentation folders that are handled once or twice and then displayed or filed, digital foil holds up indefinitely under normal conditions. The mark is essentially permanent against fading; it is the surface abrasion that limits its service life on high-touch pieces.

For programs that need both a digital foil logo and a structural finish (rigid box wrap, sleeve wrap, magnetic closure), we recommend a UV varnish over the foil to extend abrasion resistance. UV varnish adds a small cost and one extra production day but doubles the touch-cycle rating.

Where we run digital foil in Türkiye

Digital foil production sits in our Levent studio, with structural finishing at our Esenler partner facility and assembly at our Tuzla depot. Substrates are sourced from Eskişehir and İzmir paper mills and from European suppliers for specialty stocks (curious metals, recycled cotton, kraft, synthetic). Lead times on imported stocks are 5-10 working days; in-stock domestic stocks ship express or next-day.

For premium corporate programs delivered to İstanbul offices, Ankara government and diplomatic addresses, and Antalya resort venues, we run hand-delivery for high-value orders and tracked road freight for larger volumes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for digital foil?

Digital foil is economical from 1 piece. The press setup cost is essentially zero per design, so short runs of 1-25 pieces are routine. The crossover point where hot-stamp foil becomes more cost-effective is typically 500-1,000 pieces depending on substrate and design complexity.

How long does a digital foil order take?

A typical corporate business card or invitation order takes 5-7 working days. Express 3-4 day turnarounds are available on simple jobs with in-stock substrates. Variable-data orders add 1-2 working days.

Is digital foil as durable as hot-stamp foil?

No. Digital foil is rated for 200-400 touch cycles on coated paper, compared to 1,000+ for hot-stamp foil. For high-touch applications (rigid packaging closures, name badges handled daily), we recommend hot-stamp foil or a UV varnish over the digital foil to extend service life.

Which substrates work with digital foil?

Coated paper from 150 GSM up, uncoated paper from 200 GSM up, paperboard, recycled board, textured stocks, most synthetic substrates and apparel hang tags. Digital foil is not suitable on fabric, plastic films or any substrate that can't pass through a digital press.

Can digital foil carry variable data?

Yes — each piece can carry a unique name, number or code through a variable-data workflow. Common applications: numbered certificates, named invitations, VIP event passes. The variable-data workflow adds 1-2 working days to the lead time.

Is Corp-Merch a licensed digital press operator or officially accredited by any equipment manufacturer?

We are an independent corporate merch decoration provider in Türkiye. We are not licensed, endorsed or accredited by any digital press manufacturer, foil supplier or paper mill. Brand and product names are used to describe compatible substrates and decoration methods.
