Cotton vs polyester — picking the right fabric for your corporate merch

Side-by-side comparison of cotton and polyester for corporate apparel in Türkiye — GSM weight, durability, decoration method, MOQ, TRY pricing, sustainability and which audience each fabric serves.

Why the fabric choice matters for Turkish buyers

Cotton and polyester are the two most-used fibres in Türkiye's corporate apparel finishing belt, and they behave very differently. Cotton is a natural fibre that breathes, softens with wash, and is the default for premium-tier welcome kits and university programmes. Polyester is a synthetic that holds colour, resists wrinkles, dries fast, and is the default for high-volume trade-show give-aways and outdoor / event wear. Türkiye's cotton-poly and 100% cotton finishing capacity sits in Bursa, Kayseri, Gaziantep, and Istanbul (İkitelli OSB); recycled-polyester (rPET) finishing is concentrated in İkitelli OSB and Kocaeli.

The right pick depends on the programme's priorities. A 230 gsm ringspun-cotton polo with embroidery is the standard for a bank's Levent-area HQ. A 180 gsm 100% recycled-polyester t-shirt with DTF printing is the standard for a TÜYAP trade-show campaign. A 280 gsm cotton-poly fleece hoodie is the standard for a corporate winter welcome kit. Same brief, three different answers — the right fabric depends on the audience's day-to-day use, the brand book's spec, and the budget per head.

When to pick cotton

Cotton is the right call when the audience values comfort, breathability, and a premium hand-feel. Banks in Levent and Maslak (Garanti BBVA, İş Bank, Yapı Kredi, Akbank), consulting firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG Türkiye, McKinsey), and hospitality front-of-house (Rixos, Divan, Mandarin Oriental, Raffles, Four Seasons, Çırağan Palace Kempinski) typically run cotton or cotton-poly blend polos and tees. University programmes at Boğaziçi, ODTÜ, İTÜ, Hacettepe, Ege, and Bilkent default to cotton for orientation, alumni, and student-club briefs. Cotton is also the right call for embroidery — the textured surface and the flat left-chest panel of a 230 gsm ringspun-cotton pique polo accept a 6–8 cm embroidered crest cleanly.

For sustainability programmes, GOTS-certified organic cotton is the gold standard: the entire supply chain is audited from field to finished garment, water use is regulated, and pesticide use is restricted. BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) is a less rigorous but more accessible alternative; BCI-certified cotton is widely available from Bursa and Kayseri finishing houses. Recycled-cotton blends are emerging in 2025–2026 but supply is still limited.

When to pick polyester

Polyester is the right call for high-volume give-aways, fast-drying apparel, and sublimation all-over-print programmes. Trade-show swag at TÜYAP Beylikdüzü, CNR Expo Yeşilköy, IFM, and Istanbul Expo Center often runs 100% polyester or cotton-poly tees because the lower unit cost and the faster finishing turnaround fit the campaign budget. Outdoor and event wear (cycling jerseys, running tees, athletic hoodies) default to polyester because of moisture-wicking finishes. Sublimation printing — which lays dye directly into the polyester fibre — is the right method for full-colour all-over-print programmes that cotton cannot economically serve.

Recycled-polyester (rPET) is the sustainability-grade option. rPET is made from post-consumer PET bottles (water bottles, food packaging) that are cleaned, shredded, melted, and re-spun into fibre; the result is a 100% recycled-polyester yarn with the same hand-feel and performance as virgin polyester. GRS (Global Recycled Standard) certification tracks the recycled content through the supply chain. rPET finishing capacity in Türkiye is concentrated in İkitelli OSB and Kocaeli, with major brand commitments (H&M, Decathlon, IKEA, Adidas, Puma) driving supply-chain investment.

Both categories are quoted in TRY excluding KDV 20% (10% on textiles under the textile-apparel reduced rate, 1% on basic food items, 0% on export). For EU export within the Single Market, e-Fatura issues VAT-free; EUR.1 / EUR-MED certificates of origin run through the İstanbul İhracatçı Birlikleri. Strike-off samples run 2–4 iş günü with a per-sample fee credited against the final invoice on 200+ unit orders. B2B export to the EU flows under the 1996 EU–Türkiye Customs Union; for the UK (post-Brexit), Switzerland, the Gulf, and the wider Levant, we apply CMR plus EUR.1 / EUR-MED, HS tariff codes, and Chamber of Commerce certificates as required. Frequently asked questions

Is cotton more expensive than polyester?

Cotton is generally 15–30% more expensive than virgin polyester at the same GSM tier. The gap narrows for rPET (recycled polyester), which trades at a small premium to virgin polyester and is closer to mid-tier cotton. Heavyweight 280 gsm cotton-poly blends are the most cost-efficient compromise for premium welcome kits.

Which fabric is more sustainable?

GOTS-certified organic cotton is the most sustainable option for natural-fibre programmes; BCI is a less rigorous alternative. rPET (recycled polyester) with GRS certification is the most sustainable for synthetic-fibre programmes. Both reduce environmental footprint versus virgin cotton or virgin polyester.

Can I blend cotton and polyester?

Yes. Cotton-poly blends (50/50, 60/40, 80/20) are widely available and combine the breathability of cotton with the durability of polyester. The 60/40 cotton-poly blend is the standard for corporate hospitality and event wear; 80/20 is the standard for premium welcome kits.

Which fabric accepts embroidery better?

Both fabrics accept embroidery. Cotton holds embroidery cleanly because of the textured surface and the flat left-chest panel. Polyester requires a stabilizer backing for clean embroidery; without it, the stitches can pucker. Most Turkish finishing houses in Bursa and Kayseri run stabilizer by default on polyester.

What is the typical lead time for a 500-unit order?

5–10 iş günü after artwork sign-off for either fabric. Strike-off adds 2–4 iş günü. EU export adds 1–2 iş günü for EUR.1 issue. For runs above 5,000 units, finishing-house setup amortisation kicks in and per-unit cost drops 15–25%.

Does cotton shrink in the wash?

Yes — cotton can shrink 3–5% in the first hot wash, especially in the entry-tier ringspun cotton. Pre-shrunk cotton (sanforised) is widely available and reduces shrinkage to under 2%. Polyester is shrink-resistant.
