A Nicosia SaaS wanted 50 branded hoodies for its winter offsite, each carrying a full-colour illustration of the engineering team's mascot on the back. Embroidery at 8 stitches/mm crushed the gradient tones of the illustration; screen printing required one screen per Pantone and a 100-unit minimum. Models and materials that work with DTF on a hoodie

The working grade is 80/20 cotton-polyester brushed fleece at 350–450 gsm (Gildan 18500, B&C Hooded). The premium tier is 100% cotton heavyweight loopback at 480–520 gsm (Stanley/Stella Creator, Continental N33) for sustainability briefs and Loro Piana-tier brand books. Pullover vs zip vs poncho doesn't change DTF performance — the press fits any flat panel. Print placements: chest-left (120×120 mm corporate mark), chest-centre (280×360 mm hero illustration), full back (380×480 mm full-bleed artwork), sleeve (80×80 mm). Heavyweight 500+ gsm fleece needs 165°C and a 75-second dwell for proper adhesive bond. Avoid the kangaroo pocket lining — the press cannot reach it cleanly and the print will lift.

Print specifics: film, ink stack, and finish on fleece

Standard production: 0.08 mm PET film, CMYK+W ink stack with optional metallic gold/silver at +€0.50 per unit, hot-melt polyurethane adhesive powder dusted across the wet ink. Cure in tunnel dryer at 110°C for 90 seconds, then heat-press to the hoodie at 160°C for 60 seconds (165°C / 75s for 500+ gsm fleece), medium pressure, peel cold. White underbase density is 110 micron on dark hoodies to keep colour saturation over the brushed yarn. The finished print survives 50+ machine-wash cycles at 30°C with mild detergent, no fabric softener, hang dry. For best wash durability on fleece we add a second press at 160°C for 10 seconds after the cold peel — this re-seats the adhesive into the brushed fibre.

Bundling and packaging

Hoodies ship folded in 350×450 mm poly mailers (€0.30 per mailer uplift) or in a kraft gift box with tissue interleave for VIP tiers and client handover (€1.80 per box uplift). Bulk deliveries to a Limassol office go in master cartons of 15 hoodies each. Each parcel carries a 60×90 mm care card with cold-wash instructions. For retail sale we add a branded belly band hanger and a 10×150 mm size strip on the collar. How does DTF compare to embroidery on a hoodie?

DTF reproduces full-colour gradients, photographs, and fine linework that embroidery cannot — at the cost of a slightly heavier print feel on heavy fleece. Embroidery (see embroidery-on-hoodies) gives a 3D textured mark that survives 100+ washes, but is limited to solid-colour vector logos at sizes up to 130×130 mm. Choose DTF for hero illustrations, embroidery for brand marks.

Can the print survive 50+ washes on a heavyweight fleece pullover?

Yes — DTF survives 50+ machine-wash cycles at 30°C with mild detergent. We recommend cold wash inside-out, no bleach, no fabric softener, hang dry. The adhesive re-seats into the brushed yarn on the second press at 160°C / 10 seconds, which is critical for fleece — without the re-press, the print can pill off at the edges after 20 washes.

Can DTF print on the hood panel?

Not as a flat press — the hood is too curved for the press plate, and the print would crack at the seams after the first wash. We can hand-apply the DTF transfer to a flat-cut hood panel before construction (cut-and-sew process), which adds +€3.40 per unit to the production cost.

What is the largest print size DTF can place on a hoodie?

The largest single-piece transfer is 400×500 mm — covers the full back of an XL pullover with a 10 mm margin. For larger wraparound artwork (380×700 mm full back plus side panels) we use two overlapping transfers with a registration mark, which adds €1.80 per unit to the cost.
