Screen printing on a 40-unit run means a new screen per Pantone, a setup charge that swallows the unit margin, and gradient art that simply will not survive the mesh. DTG forces the tee to be 100% cotton and adds a pre-treatment step that slows the queue. DTF avoids both constraints: artwork prints in reverse on a 0.08 mm PET film in CMYK plus white, dusted with hot-melt adhesive powder, then heat-pressed to the fabric at 160°C for 60 seconds. A four-colour logo on a 180 gsm ringspun tee finishes in one pass with no per-colour setup and no per-substitution. The print sits 0.15 mm above the yarn — flush, no plastic skin, no cracking at the collar after the first wash.

Models and materials that work with DTF on a t-shirt

The standard fabric is 180 gsm ringspun combed cotton (Gildan 64000, B&C Exact 150, Sol's Imperial). The premium tier is 220 gsm heavyweight cotton-rich for hospitality front-of-house (Stanley/Stella Stella Stellar, Continental N03). For tri-blend the working grade is 50/25/25 polyester-cotton-rayon (Next Level 6010, Bella+Canvas 3413), and DTF bonds to it at 162°C with a 65-second dwell. Performance polyester tees (100% poly, moisture-wicking finish) need 165°C and a 70-second dwell to seat the adhesive into the synthetic fibre. Print placements we run: chest-left (100×100 mm mark), chest-centre (280×350 mm hero), full back (380×480 mm), and 80×80 mm sleeve marks for crew uniforms. Avoid the neckline rib — adhesive creep on the elastic edge after 30+ washes lifts the print.

Print specifics: film, ink stack, and finish

We print on a 0.08 mm PET release film (KenteX ST-200 grade) with a CMYK+W ink stack plus an optional metallic gold or silver layer at +€0.50 per unit. The film exits the printer with hot-melt polyurethane adhesive powder dusted across the wet ink, then cured at 110°C for 90 seconds in a tunnel dryer so the powder sits flush in the ink layer. The film goes to a 40×50 cm heat press at 160°C, 60 seconds, medium pressure, then peels cold. White underbase density is calibrated per fabric: 35–45 micron for white tees (no underbase), 70 micron for pastel, 110 micron for black and navy. The finished print survives 50+ machine-wash cycles at 30°C with mild detergent; we cold-wash inside-out, no fabric softener, hang dry.

What's the difference between DTF and DTG on a t-shirt?

DTF prints onto a PET film first and heat-transfers to the fabric; it works on cotton, poly-cotton, triblend, and 100% polyester, and survives 50+ washes. DTG (see dtg-on-t-shirts) prints directly into the yarn with water-based pigment; only works on 100% cotton with pre-treatment; softer hand-feel; 30+ washes. DTF is the right call when the artwork has gradients, photographs, or fine linework that embroidery and screen print cannot reproduce.

Can the print include metallic gold or silver?

Yes — metallic gold and silver inks are added as a separate layer in the DTF stack at +€0.50 per unit, then transferred in one pass. For a true foil-stamp look (a separate hot-foil press on top of the DTF base) we charge +€1.20 per unit. Metallics read best on dark fabrics — on a white tee the contrast disappears.

How many washes does the DTF print survive on a 180 gsm cotton tee?

50+ machine-wash cycles at 30°C with mild detergent. For longest life we recommend cold wash inside-out, no bleach, no fabric softener, hang dry. The print sits flush with the yarn — no raised plastic, no peeling at the edges. Tumble-drying weakens the adhesive bond over time, so we do not recommend it for crew uniforms going through industrial laundering.

Can each t-shirt carry a unique name on the back?

Yes — variable-data printing is included up to 50 unique names. Above 50 we charge €0.30 per unique name after the first 50. Send a CSV with name, title, or serial-number columns and we lay out each tee individually. Lead time adds 1 business day for variable-data layout.

Does the DTF print make the t-shirt less breathable?

No — the print is 0.15 mm thick and the adhesive layer is micro-perforated during the heat-press, so the cotton fibre breathes normally under the print area. There is no heat trap, no sweating on the chest. For high-intensity wear (gym, sports, outdoor hospitality crew), DTF outperforms vinyl and screen print.
